(Conversation)
*This passage contains selected important sections from the original text and is intended to present the key information relevant to the questions. It is not the complete original text, and some unrelated parts may have been omitted.
Caller: And what are the main activities?
David: Well, the first thing is traveling to the other side of a lake.
Caller: You mean by boat?
David: No, it’s the little train that runs along the shore off the lake. It’s very popular.
Caller: Oh, my children will love that.
David: And that’s how you get round to the caves. This is where the glowworms live. So you spend some time exploring the caves and looking at the remarkable lights and patterns given off by the worms in the dark.
Caller: That does sound interesting. And any other information?
David: Oh, just one thing. How old are your children?
Caller: Uh, seven and ten. Why?
David: No, that’s okay. It’s just that children must be five or older to go in the caves. Otherwise, they might get scared in the dark. But yours will be fine.
Task:
Write ONE WORD AND/OR A NUMBER for each answer.
Kingstown Tours
Name of tour: Cave Explorers
Price: $93
Main activities: go in a small 1. __________________ to the other side of the lake; explore caves
Other information: minimum age of 2. __________________ years
(Monologue)
Well, good morning everyone and a warm welcome to the Wilford Living Museum. Before you look around, I’d like to tell you a bit about the history of Wilford and the purpose of the museum.
Well, if we go back to the early 1800s, Wilford was very different to what you see today. At that time, the forests had already been cut down, but there were no large urban settlements here, just a few small villages. And this whole area was a place where local people kept animals or grew crops. Those were the only economic activities.
But then, in 1830, something happened in Wilford that transformed the area. The discovery of rich deposits of coal and other minerals opened up many commercial possibilities. Mines were built so these deposits could be brought to the surface. Then a canal was constructed so that canal boats could transport the minerals to other regions. Finally, a railway was built through Wilford in the 1850s, creating many new opportunities.
Task:
Choose the correct letter, A, B, or C.
Question 1
In the early 1800s most land in Willford was
A occupied by houses.
B used for farming.
C covered in trees.
其餘選項皆為干擾項:A 錯誤,因為音檔指出「no large urban settlements here, just a few small villages(這裡沒有大型城市聚落,只有少數小村莊)」且農業是「the only economic activity(唯一的經濟活動)」,這表明雖然有少數村落房子,但當地主要是一個小型的農業區域,而非大部分土地都被房屋所佔據;C 錯誤,因為音檔明確指出「the forests had already been cut down(森林已被砍伐完)」。準備這類題目時,學生應特別注意同義替換(例如:「kept animals or grew crops」=「used for farming」),並仔細分析句構以排除錯誤選項。
(Academic Discussion)
Tutor: OK, Kiara and Finn, can you tell me how your project is going? Your general topic was the future of work, wasn’t it?
Kiara: Yes, we’ve read a lot of articles on it. Some were more interesting than others.
Finn: There were a couple of writers that just made some strong statements without really backing them up.
Kiara: The problem is, it’s such a big topic. Some of the articles were aimed at graduates, and some of them were targeting people who’ve been in work for years. We should have narrowed down our topic before we started searching.
Finn: But anyway, the focus was always the changing nature of jobs, how it’s all happening so quickly.
Kiara: Exactly. Every single article said we can forget the way things used to happen.
Finn: Like you started out as an apprentice and then you stayed in the same company for years. That’s over.
Task:
Choose the correct letter, A, B, or C.
Question 1
Kiara and Finn agree that the articles they read on the future of work
A mainly reflect the concerns of older employees.
B refer to the end of a traditional career path.
C tend to exaggerate the likely changes.
聽力開始前,學生應先閱讀題幹與選項,並找出「Kiara and Finn」、「agree」、「articles」、「future of work」、「older employees」、「traditional career path」以及「exaggerate」等關鍵詞。 準備這類題目時,學生應特別注意同義替換(例如:「forget the way things used to happen」/「that’s over」=「end of a traditional career path」),以及判斷發言人之間是否達成一致。
(Academic Lecture)
Let’s start with the three main types of fossils found here. The first type is transitional fossils, which are quite rare. These fossils display characteristics that bridge the evolutionary gap between ancestral species and their modern descendants. A well-known example would be fossils that showed traits of both dinosaurs and birds.
Next, the second type is actual fossilised remains of ancient organisms, which is categorised under ‘preserved ones’. Unlike the first type, preserved fossils maintain much of the original structure, making it possible to see distinct features of plants or animals.
The third category is Ichnofossils, which can help to trace fossil size and forms through the actual remains of an organism, but instead provide evidence of their activity. These include footprints, burrows, or tunnels left behind by prehistoric creatures.
Task:
Complete the notes below.
Write NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS for each answer.
The Preservation of Organisms and Fossils
Three types of fossils:
- Transitional fossils: rare, show evidence of evolutionary change
- 1. __________________ fossils: actual fossilised remains
- Ichnofossils: 2. __________________ indirect evidence of animals, e.g. footprints or tunnels

(Passage 1)
*This passage contains selected important sections from the original text and is intended to present the key information relevant to the questions. It is not the complete original text, and some unrelated parts may have been omitted.
The Pyramid of Cestius
A 2,000-year-old pyramid in the city of Rome has been restored by archaeologists.
Though Rome draws tourists from around the world to its many impressive sites, one notable monument there has never attracted nearly as much interest: the Pyramid of Cestius. But why would there be a pyramid in Italy? After the Roman conquest of Egypt in 30 B.C., Egyptian architectural style became the fashion in Rome.
Though obelisks and other monuments inspired by Egypt’s great pyramids sprang up around the city, only two actual pyramids are known to have been built. The only one left standing, the Pyramid of Cestius, was designed as the burial pyramid for a Roman politician named Caius Cestius, who ordered that the building work be completed within a period of 330 days. Construction took place at some point between 18 B.C. and 12 B.C. Cestius’ pyramid had a layer of white Carrara marble on the outside, and was constructed from brick held together by a basic kind of cement on the inside. One of the things that strikes you when you look at the pyramid is how steep it is, so that the shape of Cestius’ pyramid is quite unlike that of typical Egyptian ones. This is a difference that could have been the result of inaccurate information sent back to Rome by soldiers who saw the pyramids in person in Egypt. Alternatively, Roman builders could have drawn inspiration from the pyramids in Nubia, a region located in what is today northern Sudan and southern Egypt.
Task:
Do the following statements agree with the information in Reading Passage 1?
In boxes 1-2 on your answer sheet, write:
TRUE if the statement agrees with the information
FALSE if the statement contradicts the information
NOT GIVEN if there is no information about this
- The Pyramid of Cestius has always been one of Rome’s most popular tourist attractions.
- The construction of the Pyramid was completed before Cestius’ death.
第 2 題中,文章指出塞斯提烏斯下令要求該陵墓工程需在 330 天內完成(ordered that the building work be completed within a period of 330 days)。
(Passage 2)
*This passage contains selected important sections from the original text and is intended to present the key information relevant to the questions. It is not the complete original text, and some unrelated parts may have been omitted.
Herbal Medicines
The history of herbal medicines in New Zealand has long featured disagreements of this sort. For the early Maori people—the original inhabitants of New Zealand—the forest was well stocked with edible plants that were an obvious source of nutrition, but that were taken for the relief of pain as well. While the earliest European doctors in New Zealand relied on imported dried herbs, many were keen to include native plants in their practices: in his book published in 1891, herbalist James Neil described manuka and koromiko as among New Zealand’s most valuable herbs. Despite its popularity among some, however, herbalism continued to have its detractors. In 1907 Neil, president of the then very young New Zealand Association of Medical Herbalists (NZAMH), petitioned parliament for legal status for herbalists, but he was unsuccessful. The Evening Post newspaper perhaps summed up the opposing position by claiming that herbalism ‘is obsolete’.
In fact, traditional Maori medicine faced a more determined challenge. In 1908 the government passed a controversial law that had the effect of restricting traditional herbal practice, or pushing it underground. Then for a brief period in the mid-20th century, herbal medicine was largely ignored, shunned by the majority of the medical profession, and absent from medical school curricula. But a centuries-old tradition was not going to disappear so easily, and in the 1980s the NZAMH was revived, and it became possible to complete a course in herbal medicine at several polytechnics around the country. However, the problem remained of how to connect the culture of plant-based medicine with conventional scientific thinking in order to promote herbal use within the general population. For many years, the limited evidence there was that herbal medicines worked was undermined by lack of interest among general practitioners and within the scientific community.
Task:
Complete the summary below.
Choose ONE WORD ONLY from the passage for each answer.
Write your answers in boxes 1-4 on your answer sheet.
The history of herbal medicines in New Zealand
Originally, the Maori people consumed plants to help deal with 1 ____________, and also as food. When Europeans settled in the country, a 2 ____________ by James Neil showed that some of them also recognised the medicinal value of native plants. However, criticism of herbal medicine appeared in one newspaper in 1907. The following year, the use of herbal medicines was made more difficult because of a new 3 ____________, and for a time in the mid-20th century, they were largely ignored. Then in the 1980s a number of institutions started offering a 4 ____________ in the subject, although for many years there was still little evidence to support their use, because doctors and academics were not interested.
第 1 題,文章說明對早期毛利人而言,森林植物「不僅是顯而易見的營養來源,也用於緩解疼痛(were an obvious source of nutrition, but that were taken for the relief of pain as well)」,這與將植物作為食物及協助應對疼痛緩解問題的概念相符,因此答案為「pain」。第 2 題,文章提到「in his book published in 1891, herbalist James Neil described manuka and koromiko as among New Zealand’s most valuable herbs(草藥師詹姆斯·尼爾在其 1891 年出版的書籍中,將麥盧卡和科羅米科形容為紐西蘭最有價值的草藥之一)」,表明尼爾的著作展現了原生植物的藥用價值,因此答案為「book」。第 3 題,文章提及 1908 年「政府通過了一項具爭議的法律,其效果限制了傳統草藥的使用(the government passed a controversial law that had the effect of restricting traditional herbal practice)」,對應次年新法規使草藥使用變得更加困難的情境,因此答案為「law」。第 4 題,文章說明 1980 年代「全國各地的多所理工學院也開始開設草藥療法課程(it became possible to complete a course in herbal medicine at several polytechnics around the country)」,符合多家機構開始提供該領域課程的文意,因此答案為「course」。
(Passage 3)
*This passage contains selected important sections from the original text and is intended to present the key information relevant to the questions. It is not the complete original text, and some unrelated parts may have been omitted.
The Costs of Brand Loyalty
A Londoner with a sudden urge for giant African snails could do worse than head to the bustling marketplace in Brixton, a part of south London that is home to many people from Africa. Markets like Brixton Market that cater to migrants are a testament to the fact that people often retain very strong preferences for the kinds of food they grew up eating. Just ask the expatriate Britons who flock to Tea and Sympathy in New York’s Greenwich Village for pots of Marmite, a yeast-based spread whose delights baffle other nationalities (and many of their own compatriots).
Task:
Choose the correct letter, A, B, C, or D.
Question 1
In the first paragraph, the writer’s purpose is to
A show that London has a multicultural society.
B point out that people grow up eating food from markets.
C give examples of the wide variety of food available in Britain.
D illustrate the way adults enjoy eating food from their childhood.
Writing
(Academic Writing Task 1)
You should spend about 20 minutes on this task.
The charts below show the land area lost (thousand km²) per one-meter rise and population (million) affected per one-meter rise in sea level in the predicted future. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Write at least 150 words.

同時,使用精準的比較詞彙也很有幫助,例如「stands out as the most impacted(受影響最嚴重)」、「registered the lowest(數值最低)」以及「in sharp contrast to(與…
(Writing Task 2)
You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.
Write about the following topic:
Some people think accessibility of electronic games on portable devices is harmful to society and individual.
To what extent do you agree or disagree?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Write at least 250 words
Speaking
Part 1|暖身題(Introduction & Interview)
Weather
- What kind of weather do you like most?
- Does the weather affect your mood?
- What do you usually do on sunny days?
- Do you prefer dry or wet weather?
(Long Turn)
Describe a live sports event you watched and liked.
You should say:
what it was
when and where you watched it
who you watched it with
and explain why you liked it.
You will have to talk about the topic for one to two minutes. You have one minute to think about what you are going to say. You can make some notes to help you if you wish.
使用如「took place at」、「what stood out most」和「unforgettable」等轉折詞,有助於使結構更為清晰。
(Discussion)
- Why do some people like to watch sports events?
- Where do people normally watch sports events?
- What are the advantages of watching sports events online?
- What sports matches are suitable for children to attend?
