托福寫作技巧 – 如何寫出不「離題」的高分作文？

TOEFL寫作一直都是台灣考生普遍最弱的一項。「離題」這個現象，在TOEFL寫作裡很常發生，尤其考生常常覺得疑惑為何自己寫得很順，字數也夠，但分數為什麼卻不高呢?其實這就是犯了「離題」這個大錯誤，但自己卻沒發現。

我們用2018/9/2出現的題目來舉例:
Do you agree or disagree with the statement: The best way for a teacher to help students become more interested in a subject is to explain how that subject will help them outside school. 2018/9/2,

2018/9/2題目中譯
請問您贊成或反對以下論點: 老師讓同學在學習科目上增加興趣最好的方法是解釋這些科目在離開學校以後的助益有哪些。

假如同學只提到 “interested in a subject learning”就會嚴重離題，沒討論到問題核心。這一題並不是在討論如何讓學生能對科目更有興趣，而是“help them outside school.”讓同學們知道這些科目在離開學校以後的助益有哪些。

再用這一題舉例:
Do you agree or disagree with the statement that people would be happier if they had fewer possessions.
題目中譯- 請問您贊成或反對此看法: 擁有較少的財產的人比較開心

看到這一題同學很容易把”possession”誤會成”money”. Possession指的是擁有物或財產，並非只指金錢。所以若同學一直誤認為金錢並且不斷以錢的方式來進行討論，這篇寫作就會離題了。

在獨立寫作Independent Task裡，考生要在短時間內列舉三個與問題核心相關的理由，並且要提供站得住腳的原因，並且切記一個很重要的寫作策略 – 那就是你的王牌論點要擺在最後面。如將最強的論點擺在最前面，會容易出現虎頭蛇尾的現象，造成結構失和。

高分TOEFL文章需要能流暢並且有力的表達你的觀點。但TOEFL考官要負責批改成千上萬的TOEFL文章，要怎麼寫才能夠吸引到他的注意呢?這時文章架構就非常重要。好的轉折詞能讓文章比較有邏輯，也讓讀者能較好理解每句話的關係，藉此讓論點淋漓盡致地發揮。但除了使用for example, also, in addition等常用的轉折語以外還有甚麼可以給文章帶來新氣象呢? 可以嘗試著用「名詞子句」當主詞來破題不但會吸引讀者的目光，並且是一個有力的開始。 另外，用”when”或是’ this could be seen”來代替”for example”可以讓你的文章跳脫出制定框架。在文章最後提供完所有論點後，可以用短句來加強讓整個文章更加分。

我們就用2018/12/1出現的托福考題-「今昔比較題型」範例來做個簡單示範: Is it as important for older people to learn and study new things as young people to do so? (題目中譯: 請問年長者是否應該和年輕人一樣的學習新事物?)

(用名詞子句當主題句來破題示範): That learning new things speaks of less importance for old people, lastly, is seen in their purpose of learning different from youngsters. For the younger students, building up a stronghold of knowledge on the blocks of new learnings is intended to shine in academics; for the young workers, mastering a new skill is aimed to lay a solid foundation for a brighter future career. Elder people, however, channel time and effort to new learnings for some purposes that are less practical or less interest-oriented. (用When代替 for example) For example, When they come to approach cooking, chess, or manipulate a chic electronic device such as i-pad, they do not mean to become a promising candidate for a renowned university or lucrative job; they just learn for fun, to dissipate time in retirement, or to have more common grounds with their pals and grandchildren. The purposes are materially different. (文章結尾用短句加強)

請切記一篇作文僅有30分鐘的時間，要測試同學是否能在有限的時間內清楚表達自己的論點，並且給強而有力的支持理由和論點是ETS的考試用意。否則就算你的文法、句型或用字遣詞都很完美，但文章論點卻離題也是無視於補。因此同學切記要針對問題核心做回答，把最強的論點放在最後，使用多元的轉折語幫助自己邏輯清晰，考試作答時便會覺得越寫論點越有力，進而拿下高分喔。
