In 1954, everything changed. The Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education established that the segregation of race which had been permitted previously was “inherently unequal” and must be immediately addressed. All public schools were required to desegregate, and race discrimination was no longer legally tolerated within the educational system. Unfortunately, this led to riots and public resistance within many white school enclaves, particularly from public schools within the South. In response to this public outcry, in 1958 the federal government introduced legislation that stated that fear of public unrest does not excuse state governments from complying with school desegregation. Desegregation efforts continued until school attendance for black students was not limited by racial discrimination.

Question:

What can be inferred about Southern views regarding desegregation within this paragraph?

A. Southerners were open to desegregation.

B. Southerners enjoyed having black students attend white schools.

C. Southerners were uneasy about desegregation.

D. Southerners were very opposed to desegregation.
